Open Source Tools For GeoInformatics
To accompany the presentation I made at UCL in February 2007, I’ve put together a collection of links to some of the stuff I talked about:
- PostGIS – is a spatial database that can put up a good fight against offering of companies like Oracle, and totally trounces MS SQL server in every respect. Get more info here.
- OpenLayers is a pure Javascript slippy map client. It talks to a WMS, or to a static file system and gives you a whole load of Ajax magic with relative ease. Get more information here. You can find the NPE demo here
- GeoRSS encorporates Geographic information into RSS, allowing GI to be syndicated accross the Internet. Find out more about GeoRSS here.
- Mapnik is a GIS library, written in C++ with Python bindings, that allows you to make really nice looking maps from geodata. Find more information here
- OpenStreetMap is a project to create a free map of the world. Browse and edit the map here
I also used a screenshot from Mapufacture, which is an aggregator for GeoRSS.
Other things worth checking out are the first OpenStreetMap conference – The State of the Map 2007, which will be held in Manchester in July 2007. If you want to find out more about open source software and particularly open mapping and open geodata, the conference is well worth a visit.
